Full size spare tire in P2 S60/V70?

Post by cn90 »

Not sure if this question has been asked before...

Does a full-size spare (either 16" or 17" wheel/tire combo) fit in the trunk compartment (designed for the donut spare tire)?

Should fit but best to measure the width of a tire or just put one in for sizing.

Full size 16" tire fits nicely in both my '01 and '02 V70s. It's snug but not difficult to get in and out. Seems to me that the enclosure was designed to accommodate the full size tire since the donut tire has lots of clearance. Note that a longer than standard battery makes it fiddly to get in and out, but not particularly difficult. Jim

Update,

I had a little time today so the 2007 S60 with 235-45-17 tires and L3 (H6) battery was the guinea pig...
Attached is the photo of the factory spare tire vs full-size tire 235-45-17.

The 235-45-17 fits in terms of diameter but the thickness (the width) of the tire pushes the trunk
plywood floor piece upwards as shown.

So, if you truly wants FS tire, then you may have to live with the lifted floor issue.
Removing the foam piece under the tire may help with the lifted floor issue (I have not tried this yet bc I put
the spare tire back in the trunk).

HTH.

I have a full size spare 215-65-r16 in a 2004 XC70.

After taking out the foam piece under the spare and the storage bin the floor closes without issue.

It's hard to take out with an H8 battery. With an H6 probably better.

Our 2007 S60 2.5T came with 205/55ZR16. The 235/45/17 came from another S60, was told it was a T5 model but forgot what year. Both those were factory sizing for the 2007 S60 2.5T. The 16" would fit better in the trunk and could be used with the 17" for short duration if not an AWD car.

Our 2009 S60 2.5T AWD came with the H8 for some reason. Just replaced it a couple of weeks ago and from the pictures above and recollection the H8 should fit without issue. If I remember to I'll check our 2002 V70 XC to see if the spare tire well is any different in terms of having an H8.

I was carrying a full 215/65R16 in there in XC70. Floor was slightly lifted, mostly because of the third row cushions.

The tire sizes listed for most P2 S60 cars are:

- 235-45-17...Profile = 235 x 0.45 = 105.75 mm
- 205-55-16...Profile = 205 x 0.55 = 112.75 mm
- 215-55-16...Profile = 215 x 0.55 = 118.25 mm

P2 V70 is mostly 235-45-17, XC70 is mostly 215-65-16 and 215-60-17 per Tirerack.com.

So, if you want FS tire, then you should look at what you currently have in the 4 tires and debate yourself:
- Exactly the same tire profile vs
- "205" tire so the floor does not lift up too much, but you may have to deal with rolling diameter differences if you ever use the spare tire.

For now, I just live with the donut spare tire...

Been with AAA for over 35 years. Slowly worked up to the longer distance Annual Road Side Service, now at the 200 miles once a year and up to 7 local tows I think. Have used the 200 mile tow 3 times in the last 3 years from VA to RTP. Since we have 4 card holders on one account it means we have 4 - 200 mile tows a year.

The tow truck company in VA says AAA pays so well that they would go over the 200 miles to help the customer and to keep the customers happy so they don't lose the contract. I think one or two of the Volvos don't have a spare right now. Probably used the tow less than 6 times over the years before the recent 3 tows.
