Volvo has been overthinking its cars for about 15 years now. The stuff I read about 2020+ cars and their software is insane. The updates, the broken features, the reboots...

It's partly our fault for wanting rolling computers, but the parent in the room sometimes needs to say "No" to the children.

I think Volvo engineers need to drive a 1996 960 for a year, then come back to their work refreshed.

We are thinking about replacing our E83 at 210k miles as every NYSI inspection is getting to be a struggle. My ideal replacement would be. A 2010-2014 XC90, I sure am not interested in the late model stuff.

Maybe 4 years out of the next car, then retirement and then an EV

What are the chances of getting parts, being able to diagnose and repair todays cars in 10 years, let alone 20-30 years. Heck, many repair shops can't get parts for new cars today, let alone diagnose them without manufasturer specific software, the parts all coded to a car, parts that cannot be recoded and more. Watched a video by the Car Wizard on a 1997 F250 truck the owner had owned from new. Few issues over the year and only 136k miles on it. He planned to live out his time on this world with that truck.

Thankfully they made lots and lots of P2 chassis vehicles so the spare parts should be abundant for a while…junkyard OEM parts could get sparse though.

I have a 1977 Ford F350 truck with about 195K miles. I have never had trouble getting parts. Just last week I ordered a dome light lens and a glove box liner - $39. A latch for the sliding rear window was out of stock.
But it is a boat and sucks gas so I only drive it to haul something big.

Fair enough, but it owes you little and has that value you can keep around for those occasions you need to move something large. The other option is hiring a truck when you need one or hassling a buddy with one for their help.
