My 2003 Volvo S40 kept dying when I was traveling down the highway and when I would come to stop signs. Then it advanced to having difficulty idling. Now, it starts and runs fine, as long as I keep my foot on the accelerator, but as soon as I take my foot off the gas it dies. I am poor, so friends have been helping me, but no luck. I then read about the mass airflow sensor and think it might be the problem. What do you think?

Typical way to troubleshoot the mass airflow sensor is to unplug it and see if default flow settings will make engine start/run better.
