Bad fuel gauge, '12 XC70 3.0T

Post by jasonaileo »

I was given a '12 XC70 with 150k miles and the only real concern I want to fix is the fuel gauge does not read accurately. You can fill the tank and it might look correct but twenty minutes later, its reading half full on the little bar gauge on the instrument cluster. If you select the miles to empty message on the instrument cluster, it can count down, but also count UP! So if you had this problem, how would you go about fixing it? I know there is not an access port under the rear seat/trunk. I already have the tank removed from the car. On the tank, I can see the port to open and access the pump assembly and I can also see the fuel pump module bolted to the top of the unit. There are not two ports into my tank like earlier models. I'm guessing at the very least, I need to open up and pull the pump which probably has the level sender on it. Will a new fuel pump assembly (with a fuel level sender integral) fix this problem or do I need to also replace the fuel pump module? I've checked all fuses related to fuel and instrument cluster and they are fine. The car runs fine, so its not a duel delivery problem, its just the gauge isn't displaying the correct fuel level or miles to empty. Thanks.
