Front door central trim moulding removal 2006 XC 70

Post by Metallo »

Hi folks,

This is an XC70 2006.
The passenger from door got rusty underneath the central plastic trim, so I need to remove the rust and paint it.

How do I remove that plastic trim? To give you an idea, I am talking about P/N 39987405.

I am sure there are plastic clips, but I do not know whether I need to remove the interior panel and push them out or pull from them from outside, which most likely will break them.

Thank you,
Alex

Hey everyone, today I finally found the time to take a look at removing that plastic trim. After taking off the interior panel, I discovered there was nothing visible from the inside, (no clips) so I went ahead and began ungluing the trim. Piece by piece, I worked my way through it until I reached the end and that’s when I came across an unpleasant surprise:

I am not a welder, so I am asking what is the best way for me to patch that hole?

Perhaps, would it be easier to find a used door at a salvage yard?

Thank you,
Alex

Wow, I have never seen that on a P2, even in a scrap yard no matter what year. That is really un-lucky. Has the car been damaged and repaired previously?

The door could be reskinned and painted, but I'd look out for a used door in color.

I haven’t seen this before either. The car has never been in an accident, which makes it quite strange considering that the trim is sealed with glue. The only explanation I can think of is condensation inside the door, though that seems a long shot.

I’m already looking for a black door, but it’s not easy to find one in the right color and without scratches.

On Monday, I’ll contact some junkyards in our country to see if they have anything available.

Thank you,
Alex

I had a similar rust spot only not as bad on my '03. I got a door in the correct color for $40 at the wreckers and gave it a polish. You can't even buy a can of spray paint and primer for $40 anymore, not to mention the time it would take to repair a hole like that properly. Although NB may find these cars scarce in the auto wreckers, or maybe auto wreckers are scarce in NB also.

Yes, I agree with you all, getting a door from a junkyard seems like the best solution. Here in NB, it’s really hard to find anything for Volvo cars; about 99.99% of the parts I source come from the US since local junkyards rarely get Volvos, which probably comes down to population. I’m also checking Facebook Marketplace and I found one possible match and I’m waiting to hear back. I also looked on car-part.com and saw a few options, but they often don’t list the color, so I’ll have to call tomorrow to ask.

Not sure if Erie Vo-Vo is an option for you down in New York area. Shipping might be a bear.

The P2 XC70 doors are the same as the V70 and S60. The bottom trim on the XC70 is the only difference. The wiring harness changed from the 01-04 P2 versions to the 04-09 P2 versions. Shipping a door would be a big pain.

I Neil,

Erie is one of the main suppliers for me, they have nothing on the internet, as far as I have seen, but I can call them tomorrow.

Hi David,

If the wiring harness has changed, I’ll need to double-check that as well. The person I mentioned earlier, from whom I’m still waiting for an answer, has an ’04, so even if the door itself is compatible, I still need to verify the wiring. It’s possible I could swap it with the one from my current door, but first I have to confirm whether that replacement door is actually in good condition.

I also agree that transportation costs are definitely high. On top of that, when importing parts, even used ones, from the U.S. into Canada, you have to pay taxes depending on the province. For example, in New Brunswick it’s an additional 15%, while for our friends in Alberta it’s 5%, and so on. So yes, ideally I’d find a door here in Canada, but if that’s not possible, then the U.S. will have to be my only option.

Thank you,
Alex
