Window Regulator Guts

Hi! I just replaced the driver's front manual window regulator on an '87 245. The original regulator was in two pieces; a stamped in bolt was missing. I also found this spring type thing that I *suspect* was attached to the old regulator, but I can't really be sure. I found it in the bottom of the door after it completely failed.

The replacement came from an '84 244. A bit rusty but fully functional it turned out! Everything seems to be working without the spring, but I'm curious if anyone knows what it's for and whether I should be concerned.

There are other things as well. Could that be the bolt that held the old regulator together? What do you suppose that plastic thing was for? So many questions..

Working from failing memory here on 240 window regulators:
The spring helps lift the window when you crank the handle.
The small shiny object is the axle that was at the center of the spring. The slot fits the spring tang in the center.
The plastic is part of the guard near the door linkage and not related to the window regulator.
