Airbag recall, 2004, which fuse to disable?

Post by beewstew »

I realized today that the 2004 my son drives regularly has the airbag recall (Volvo R10136, NSTA Number 21V800) unfixed. https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?vymm=yv1sz59h241160718 Shrapnel when the airbag deploys isn't fun to think about.

The nearest Volvo dealer is more than 100 miles away. Has anyone had luck with a non-volvo dealer doing this recall repair? Or, is there a fuse I can pull in the mean-time to reduce risk? Or, is pulling the airbag explosive inflator a 10 minute job with a screwdriver?

---

Update: it's just two torx screws. Maybe t27 to take the airbag off the wheel. Per Volvo corporate it'll take a few weeks to schedule the recall replacement. So This is a pretty easy temporary fix. I'm sort of wondering what equivalent resistance would make the SRS error light go away.

According to the factory service manual at charm.il The procedure is to disconnect the battery. Let it sit, I waited overnight, and then remove the two screws. It wasn't hard at all. I'm not impressed that Volvo says this has to be done at a factory service center. Seems like normal legal cya nonsense

100 miles is a short distance when you are talking about safety. Plus you will save ton of money in price of airbag alone. No Indeoendend shop will be provided with "free" airbag from volvo and also none of them will do it at no cost to you. I would call that dealer and provide them with your vin. Make sure your car is under the recall umbrella. Set up with them a time for appointment(so they will have part and tech ). Entire procedure will take about 1 hour(with your car being washed at the end). Shrapnel is a possibility..but damge from not having an airbag is also a valid concern. Think about it as 50/50 chance. If you will disable srs module(I believe it is in the engine compartment fusebox, but not checked, so please verify for yourself) you will also disable side airbags(the ones that technically have no recall on them) so it will lower your protection in case of side impact. Best answer-your son can drive 100 miles and get it fixed.

100 miles is nothing. Why risk the death of your son like that?
