Replacing Rack-n-Pinion 2004 XC90 T6

Post by bassbunny5 »

Replacing my rack. It's leaking power steering fluid badly. My mechanic is an independent Volvo specialist and we have a long history - since 2014. He's having me source the parts since he's far too busy to do all the internet sleuthing needed to source everything. It's no problem for me to do since I enjoy doing it.

I'm getting a refurbished rack from FCP Euro. I also found a new, genuine Volvo power steering suction hose on Ebay for $27 (retails for $240 at FCP). I need help on a couple of things and am hoping someone here can clue me in:
  1. Does anyone have a good source for a complete power steering pump? Refurbished is fine or OEM. FCP has one but it doesn't have the belt/pulley strap thingy that goes on it - not sure where to find that part. Ebay has a lot but not sure if I can trust those. Even our local Volvo dealership parts website doesn't list one.
  • How many clamps/clips/o-rings do I need for the following:
  • Power steering suction hose
  • Power steering return hose
  • Power steering high pressure hose
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

1. PS pump- why do you want to replace it? If your old one was never run completely dry, it should work ok.
2. I might be wrong here, but using the analogy with my 01v70 there might be 2 different styles for supply side hose connection to the PS pump. Make sure the hose you are ordering is of correct type.
3. I belive the PS R&P is attached in the middle via engine mount. Buy new engine mount and replace it
4. Oh wait..you are in CA. What is wrong with your power steering lines? In rust belt they last quite long, so if they look good and you cant find replacement, might as well use old if they look ok.( I understand that manual will say replace hoses, pump, new fluid...).
5. Dont trust the tie rods that will be used for replacement rack. Better buy quality unit and replace them prior to instalation of the rack.
6. Look who remanufactured the unit and how much they charge. At times the price is too good to be true and it will leak very shortly. Looks like on ebay someone is selling complete new old stock for 700. With outter tie rods, might be something to check.
7. New hoses should come with o-rings.
