TLDR: p0014 code, cleaned solenoid, now it starts stumbles and dies. Not throwing any codes.

Hey everyone long time lurker first time poster here. I'm working on my 2001 v70 xc. Recently it died on my wife as she was getting onto the freeway. After I showed up it started fine and we were able to limp it home. Ran the code and got back a p0014, exhaust timing. Common place to start is the solenoid.

Today I pulled off the solenoid and bench tested it, against the one I ordered from rock auto (unfortunately I got an intake so I can't put it on). The old one bench tests well, I can hear and actually see it actuating the same as the new one. The screen is perfectly clean and the internals don't look gunked up. Someone has replaced it before me as it's the newer style. After reinstallation of the solenoid the car refuses to idle. It will catch and run for a second, then stumble, then dies.

Some other things I've tried. I found a broken connector coming off one of the coil packs and thought that was the issue. After replacing the coil pack, there was no difference. I've checked all the fuses under the hood and they're good. Fuel comes out of the line when I press the schrader valve. I swapped the fuel pump and fog light relays under the dash. I still have the start, stumble, die, condition.

Since the initial death on the freeway the car has not thrown any codes, I'm at a loss of what to try next

Any help is appreciated thanks!

Check the timing, it may have jumped a tooth or two.

Check the air intake, the charge pipe may have came off at throttle body or intercooler.

Hey guys! I took a look at the areas you pointed out. All of the boost hoses, and vacuum lines attached, are solid. I checked the timing and it doesn't look like it skipped a tooth to me. This weekend I'll try and test the cam sensor. I also want to check the fuel pressure. I'm wondering if this is a fueling issue. PEM maybe?

Your car is 2001. You dont have PEM. So it is way easier to trouble shoot.

you need a fuel pressure gauge on the rail to see if you get prime, then see if it holds pressure ,
I forget the numbers but you can look it up.

Hey all good updates today!

The car is back to running, I bought a fuel pressure gauge and couldn't get pressure at either the fuel rail or the schrader valve near the fuel filter. I ended up running 12 volts directly to the pump via the connector on the drivers side. I could immediately hear the pump start to run. Buuut I didn't see any pressure on my gauge. So I went for the simplest solution. Put some gas in it. Of course after adding 5 gallons she starts right up and runs perfect, and a solid 60 psi on the gauge.

I replaced the fuel pump unit not that long ago and the fuel level gage has been super wonky since. After filling up another 12.7 gallons at the station I put a total of 18ish gallons in. The gage reads 1 line under full with the tank completely topped off. I am thinking there are a few possibilities here.1 It could have been run totally out of gas. 2 the sending unit that sends gas over the saddle isn't working, leaving one side totally dry.

Now after driving I have the p0014 code again. But I'm considering that a different issue. Consider this thread solved! Thanks so much for your help guys!

I woukd be questioning transfer system from one side to another. Maybe the hose disconnected somehow or something cracked.
After I replaced my fuel pump I have issues with gauge accuracy as well. Likely in order to work correctly we need to replace both level units(question ware on the driver side) or the new level is made not to the proper standards and thus we have issues. My "miles to empty" is a better indicator of fuel situation. I would put a 5 gal gas can inside the trunk until you are able to dedicate tome to figure this issue..(just in case).

Yeah I started to research and it seems like you need the two level sensors to work in conjunction with eachother. I haven't figured out yet if there is a way to calibrate the two.

Definitely throwing a gas can in the back!
