My son allowed his Volvo to run dry, stating it sounded a bit "off." He has always been good at understatements. I filled it back up with oil; it does not sound as bad, but it is a long way from good. My questions:
1. How toasty is the engine? I mean, is it salvageable or not?
2. The engine had 221 K, but the body and interior are in outstanding shape. If the engine is junk, should I buy a remanufactured engine or a new one?
3. If a replacement engine is in order, what do I need to look for/stay away from?
Thank you all for your information and guidance; all help is appreciated.

What’s the use case? If it rolls a few miles to work each day you can live with engine knocks until parts start poking holes in the block. A used engine is the way to go, for a heavier run car

These turbo engines consume oil > 100K miles.
About 1L per 1000 miles.
I always keep an eye on oil level.

Pull an oil sample, worth a $40. If it’s local, I’d keep running it might run 10W40/10W30 synthetic in the hot weather as the bearings could have some hotspots that are tough on oil. If it’s hours from home at times may need a different strategy.

I would get a donor engine and rebuild it before swapping. New rod bearings, piston rings, valve stem seals, lapped valves, main seals, etc. At 200+k miles VVT hubs can go any moment, too. While transmission is out, I would open it and replace the filter, torque converter and install a new GM valve body.

The immense value of these old Swedes is that they don't rust as easy as the rest of cars of their age do. Or new Volvos.
