My volvo s70 t5r was making an annoying rattle between 1200 and 1800rpm. This became even worse for some reason a month or 2 ago and it was awfull at idle and then went away at cruising speed.
I had taken out basicly the whole dashboard but no luck. After lissening closely it sounded more close to the engine side and by pure coincidance when lissening where the source might be I saw an AC line going nuts with the car on and when I lifted it up the noice was gone.
What was happening is that the AC line at rougher rpm (idle and below 1700 ish rpm) would bang against the chassis, radiating the sound through the car on the side of the glovebox. That is why I assumed it was loose plastic dashboard or something in that sort of issue.
After jamming the AC line with some rubber I had laying around it is gone and now my car is actually sort of silent when driving hahaha. So for anyone who has an annoying rattle, check the engine bay first for moving hoses that can bang against the chassis! In the photo you see my AC line.
Solved: rattle "dashboard" -> loose AC line, volvo s70 1997 t5
