**Just to clear up. YES volvo keys can be cloned, if the locksmith knows how, theres a volvo trick


The aftermarket Silca key and the Aliexpress key are both plastic and noticibly lighter to the genuine volvo key. The Genuine volvo key can only be added via programming to the car, that is, it cannot be cloned (hence taking it apart). Programming can be expensive as in my case the dealership was unable to "add key" after downloading the software and follow up said they needed another 3 or more hours to "CEM update".

Cloning is easy when a locksmith knows how, thats the problem. The battery needs to be dis connected after every successful immobiliser log.

So to clarify my understanding, the 2 aftermarket versions do not need the modification to the transponder key chip, it is only the OE Volvo that needs to be modified for this to work?

If I get it correctly. The OEM chip needs replaced because it is read only. You cannot program a new ID code into it.
Under what conditions you need to reprogram the OEM key not the control modules is unclear .

ID48 chip was like two bucks for a dozen last time I looked. Exacerbating, of course, but replacing the chip is still two orders of magnitude cheaper than cutting a new key and mating it with car via dealer.
