2002 XC70, cabin air filter question

Post by mitchellbd »

i need to replace my cabin filter in my 2002 cross country. i have removed the old one and looked on line for a replacement. that's where my problem is, picking the right filter. they have what is called a pollen filter, a cabin air filter ,a fresh air charcoal cabin filter etc, etc.
my question is what is the correct filter. also, is there more then one fresh air filter on my car that i might not be aware of. if so where might it be located.
thanks
mitchell

That is the fresh air filter. Look at yours...if it's thin and plain, it's the cheaper one...if it's bulky and has a larger plastic retainer then it's the more expensive one...around $30? Look on www.fcpgroton.com and this should help you decide which one you have.

thanks for your prompt reply.
i have checked out FCP Groton and they show two filters for the cabin.
#30676413 for cars with the ECC system (this is the system my car has) but they call this filter a secondary filter. #9204626 is calld the main cabin filter and is for cars with the ACC system. would the ECC volvos have both filters or only the secondary.
thanks again

No Volvo takes 2 cabin filters...if you need the one for the ECC system buy it and not the one they're calling the Main one for the ACC system.

Thanks for your help with the cabin filter. The fact is i never knew there was one on this car untill i started reading this forum. This is my first volvo and the owners manual has alot to be desired. I am using this car in Mexico where the roads suck and the dirt and road dust are a big problem. Parts for this car are very hard to find so most things have to be flown down from the States. I am flying north and plan on bring an invintory of parts back with me. I have included air, cabin and oil filters, drob links and brake pads, strut mounts and wiper blades.
My question is, are there any other items you feel I should include based on the lousy conditions down here or are there heavy duty parts and filters available that I should look in to.
Thanks again for your help.

Buy the Mann or Volvo OEM oil filters...they do make a difference. I would also get a few oil cap (rubber 0-rings) as well as an extra coolant over-flow tank lid. Oh, and an assortment of bulbs would be good...especially brake light bulbs. Good luck and let us know how you're doing with your Volvo down there in Mexico!

I want to thank you again for all your help.
I found an outlet for the Mann oil filters and the caps for the overflow tank. I plan on picking up a new oil filter cap with a bunch of O rings and an assortment of bulbs. I must say this web site has been a God sent for me. We have been down here for about 4 months now and the time and energy it takes to keep my Volvo, or any car for that matter, running properly is almost a daily thing. I average about two flat tires a month and the nearest place for a repair is twelve miles away. The dirt and dust is the biggest issue however. It gets into everything. I need to wash the car every two days or so just to keep up with the build up of dirt and dust. The time spent on actual repair is nothing compaired to the time involved getting parts or just finding the right grade and type oil. The road conditions realy suck. I have gone through tie rods and ends, drop links and swaybar bushings and that is only what I am aware of today.
So thanks again for your help and keep me in mind if you think of of anything that might help.

Mitchellbd, Sounds like you are really putting your XC through a rough test. I am interested in your opinion regarding its toughness and capability for the off road or near off road conditions you have encountered.

Thanks,

Good Luck

Well I non't think "off road" conditions is the right term. It would be more like "no road" conditions or "extremely crappy" conditions. Although I have only put about 6000 mi. on the car over the last 3 months I feel it works well. Could use a little more ground clearance but all in all it has performed very well. Most of my suspention problems were just taxed to the limit here in Mexico, but were most likley bad or going bad before I left the states.
It keeps up with all the SUV classics like the Explorer, Jeep, Blazer etc. and does it with a little class and comfort. It is not however, a Land Rover or Land Cruser. Those cars might be better suited for "off roading".
Myself, I am just trying to stay on the road.

Thanks, The reason I wish to know is that I am considering buying an '07. If you had to name one weak point or area in the vehicle given what your vehicle is exposed to what would it be??

Thanks,
S
