Hello all,

I have had a problem with "Gear Shift Module Requires Servicing" error on my 08 XC70

It manifests by disabling the geartronic +/- shift, but the normal PRND works fine. So not a major issue.

There was a 2nd more annoying problem that developed where I could not remove the key, with the error "Shift gear to P to remove key".

I surmised the GSM module on the gear shift assembly was failing while driving, and until it failed it was misreading the gear lever position. When it failed, I could remove the key.

So I bought a used gear shift assembly, and replaced it. (Man! I promise I will do a video on how to disconnect the gear cable!!)

Now I seem to have solved the "Shift gear to P" problem, but I am still getting the "Gear Shift Module requires servicing error"

The geartronic seems to work shortly after startup, but within 5 minutes I get the error.

These DTC codes are active:

TCM-P086013 Gear Shift Module A Communication Circuit - General Electrical Failures - Circuit open
DTC is found active.
TCM-P086087 Gear Shift Module A Communication Circuit - Bus Signal / Message Failures - Missing message
DTC is found active.

GSM Module A is apparently the electronics unit attached to the gear shift module itself. So its the GSM-A talking to the TCM

These errors have been there since I bought the car in November of 2025.

An pointers appreciated.

Does your scanner give you any other code format? Those P0... codes you posted are rare, and I'm thinking there might be more to turn up if they're in an alternate code convention format. There are two or three conventions, and the more advanced the code scanner, the more likely it is you can switch.

There's a little here... ignore yours of course: search.php?keywords=%22Gear+Shift+Modul ... mit=Search

I'm using VIDA to check the error codes, which I guess would be the "definitive" explanation? I'm suspecting a wiring fault between the GSM module on the shifter and the TCM ... but that's way above my pay grade!

I'm guessing this means there is an issue on the link between the GSM and the TCM.

The TCM provides power to the GSM and the the gear indicator lights work fine, so power and earth are probably ok. But if there is any corrosion it might affect the error rates on the single LIN line and maybe the units just give up if the error rate goes too high.

The three junction connectors (all labelled 74/xxx) are buried too far in the bodywork for me to get at, so I'm focusing on the connections at each end.

I can see the connector on the GSM, but where is the TCM? I want to see of the connector on that side is ok, or if there is any corrosion. Is it under the airbox and is the connector accessible without pulling too many bits?

Not a discrete component. Gemini AI:

On the P3 generation Volvo XC70 (model years 2008, 2009, and 2010), the Transmission Control Module (TCM) is not a standalone plastic or metal box located in the engine bay or under the dashboard like older Volvos.

Instead, the TCM is integrated into the transmission's valve body, which is located inside the transmission fluid pan at the front of the Aisin-Warner TF-80SC 6-speed automatic transmission.

Crucial Details for Replacement or RepairInternal Component: Because it is directly bolted to the valve body inside the transmission case, accessing it requires draining the transmission fluid and removing the front transmission pan cover.

Single Unit: The TCM and the valve body are typically replaced and serviced together as a single integrated unit.

Programming Required: If you swap the TCM, it is not plug-and-play. It must be programmed via Volvo's VIDA software to match your car's VIN and immobilizer system, followed by a transmission adaptation procedure.
