Replacing Broken Front Chassis Cross Member
This is not uncommon and I have heard of it happening before.
The crossmember is not difficult to replace but it does take some time and is quite involved. The engine mounts, front suspension and steering rack are all connected to the crossmember. The easiest way to replace it is to unbolt the suspension contol arms (inner bolts) and the steering rack and carefully pull these out of the way. Then unbolt the 3 motor mount bolts that fasten the mounts to the crossmember opn each side and carefully lift the engine with a crane or chain hoist. The engine only needs to be lifted less than one inch, be careful not to break the distributor cap against the firewall. The crossmember unfastens with two bolts on eac side, remove then and reassemble in reverse order.
Please take precautions for your safety, support the car on jack stands, all the conponents are heavy and can cause serious injury if they fall.
