"SRS" Light Stuck On, Diagnostics not responding

Post by rombe3jr »

1995 volvo 850 GLT Sedan, USA 145,000 miles. The driver seat belt retractor gave in and I found a used one online for around $70 and installed it myself. Now the "SRS" light is stuck on. The Haynes Manual said to "have them replaced by a Volvo dealer," well that's not what a po penny pincher does! (And it was incredibly easy to remove the old and install the new seat belt by the way) There was a plug that I believe connects and has a sensor for the airbag... which might be the problem. We did reset the panel lights once, but the SRS light came back on. Anybody know how to fix this?

Second, my diagnostic unit is not responding... at first it was just the B module, now its both A and B... which would be handy to figure out what else is going bad! I guess I can just go to Autozone for a free scan... but is it worth the cost to get these replaced? How much will they run?

No offense to all you Volvo lovers, this car is becoming the highest maintenace vehicle of my life... granted I've driven a Nissan Sentra, Geo Prizm, and Honda Accord before this. Bought it at 105,000 miles and drive 60+ miles for work each day. Here's what I've put into it:

105,000 Miles: Timing Belt, Water Pump, Charge A/C - $550
130,000 miles: Wouldn't start, shop cleaned head gaskets - $160
134,000 miles: Rack & Pinion replaced at shop - $850
137,000 miles: Wouldn't start again, shop replaced spark plug wires, throttle body, hose and spark plugs - $315
144,000 miles: Driver Seat Belt replaced (I'm doing all the work I can now!) - $70 + labor, SRS light stuck on
145,000 miles: Cooling fan stopped working, hooked fan to battery it works, ordered an $11 used relay a week ago, still waiting for mail... in the meantime I have to top off the coolant/water every day because its constantly overheating.
Each summer since, I've had the A/C charged, its obviously leaking.
Regular maintenance myself: oil changes, tires, brake pads, etc.

Maybe I need a good slap in the face, but this seems like a lot of extra work to me.

If you change your oil, why are you not doing this yourself? This is $150 in parts . . .

stop paying for labor at shops and learn from sites like this . . .

BTW, I have a 95 850 as well and the DTC and the OBD II compete sometimes so you do need a scan tool sometimes to reset codes.
slightly modded 850 T.... ;0
2010 XC60 T6 AWD
2005 S60 2.5 T
