I can't help you with this, but have you downloaded the service manual in the sticky at the top of the page? It might be of help to you.

VA_IS does not list a physical seal part for that area of the transmission and just lists "P/N 1161409-6 chemical gasket", which sounds like you need to get a tube of Volvo liquid sealant.

Someone who's already done this needs to verify this.

Thank you for all your efforts, "akitawagon" on what page (and section) did you find this part#?
Do you or anyone else have any idea what that part is that connects to the transmission? It looks like a "cup" lid of some kind??

Has anyone sealed this area before? I assume anyone that has removed the tranny shoudl have done this or?

Thanks again for all the help

Has anyone removed this part before and re-sealed it?
How would I apply the RTV Sealant?
I guess I will be getting alot ot oil coming out when I removed this cover, huh?

i have never removed one... and out of the 6 850's ive had they have not leaked.

you referring to 30a which is the protection casing.. part number 6843815.

why not call your volvo dealer and ask their opinion on this or a trusted independant. See what the cost of the replacement gasket it or ask what they charge to replace it to give you a heads up of whats involved.

VADIS is an older version of the parts/diagnostics/repair program that Volvo techs used to use until a newer version was introduced. You can order a copy of it on ebay.

The diagram you posted is the same one provided by the program, which also gives a listing of OEM parts/part numbers. If you're referring to 30a, it's called the protecting casing like CarVolvo said. I have no idea what is behind this casing or if it the main source of your leak.

Since no one else has spoken up, you should take CarVolvo's advice and check with a good dealership or indy shop that works on 850 transmissions.
