Service engine system required message 02 v70 t5

Post by SamHouston »

I have a 02 V70 T5 with no mods and 78k. I am the second owner since 36k, no problems. Recently the "Service Engine System Required" message appeared and the Dealer says the petitiometer in the etm needs replace. Cost is $900.00. I checked in Don' ETM room, and it appears my vehicle is not included in this recall. So I have 2 questions: Is it normal for this part to break at 78k? Is $900.00 a good price for this repair. Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the reply. I called Volvo customer service to ask about this. They were very nice but said there was no form of recall. They were very quick to offer me a coupon for 30% off the parts. Is this a normal response or an indicator that they are receiving a high call volume for this? Thanks again.

Could be that they are starting to have problems with later model ETM's....they are all about the same as far as design...just that '02's and newer don't have the miles on them yet for us to really know if they will have the same issue as the '99-'01 magnetta maretti (Fiat) part. Newer parts are by Bosch I believe. Guess if they are starting to see failures, they are afraid that owners of the later vehicles will complain and start a campaign too....thus easier to offer some type of discount to try to keep everyone happy. I would take it but keep your receipts and records in case something does surface for your car in the future. Also, I would turn in your failure to the highway safety dept.

That's not really true.
Not as many miles? 02's are SIX years old and MANY have way over 100K miles.
There is NOT a general problem but just a few errent ETM's

Good point JRL....all parts go bad eventually....ETM is no exception.
