Engine oil overfilled (1996 volvo 850 turbo)

Post by thpave »

I changed my engine oil at R&S two weeks ago, and just found out that the engine oil seems to be overfilled. It is above the max mark on the dipstick. And after I start the car, the engine oil level is right between 'max' and 'min' marks. Right after I turn off the engine, the engine oil level goes up to about 1-2cm above the 'max' engine oil line....I took it to a local mechanic, he said it is ok, but I am still worried about it. Could I open the drain plug and drain the engine oil a little bit to make it back to the normal level?

And the engine oil seems to be at high temperature and smoking a little bit after driving in hot weather for some time, should I drain the oil cooler and change it next time doing the oil change? What kind of oil cooler should I use? Thanks!

You can drain some out, probably near a quart I would guess. Try it after you drain it and see if the oil is still hot and smoking.

Sounds like about a quart over full. Not a big deal, but I would drain out the extra. Make sure you don't do it with the oil hot. If you do you won't be able to get the plug screwed back in without burning your fingers.

you could just siffon it out with a small plastic tube down dipstick
or just unscrew the filter and drain oil form it, good for 1/2 qt.
