odd vibrations, 1998 S70 non turbo 120k

Hi everyone,

I have checked the topic board and have not been able to find an answer to my problem. Hence, I apologize if it has been discussed before. Anyway, my problem involves 2 separate vibrations that occur in my car at different scenarios. Thus, I doubt they are related but you guys might proof me wrong. The first vibration happens when I brake. The steering wheel vibrates violently and it is difficult to tell if it is only the steering wheel or the whole car. This occurs at diifferent braking speeds and regardless of how hard I brake. However, the vibration comes and goes and braking does not always result in the vibration. Instead, I might get a loud and annoying squeak coming from the brakes. I should mention that the brakes are not worn and are thick. They have not been changed since I bought the car. However, the vibration has been occuring since I bought the car several months ago. The second vibration of the car happens when I speed up on the highway at more than 70mph. Unlike the previous vibration, I can actually feel the whole car vibrating and specifically the gas pedal. Not that I'm trying to break speed limit laws but I have attempted to go at higher speeds to determine what happens to the car and the vibration diminishes at around 80mph and above. Also, I recently changed the setting on the transmission from economy to sport and I noticied that both vibrations are diminished at this setting. However, I realize that I am wasting much more gas. Hence, I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions that you guys might have and thank you for your time.

The Braking vibrations are almost always a sign of warped rotors.They warp most of the time from stuck calipers. Calipers that don'r recede when you let off the brakes.

The second vibration sounds like it's in the area of the drive axle or CV joints. I would also double check All four tires especially the front for being out of round and or belt damage. It's very weird when a bad tire can make you think you have a bad drive shaft or bad motor mounts. (I would check them both also). Please note all the 98's that I know of have had their front hubs replaced due to simliar issues. Any Noise?

This is true. I was getting that common vibration at 65mph and up on the freeway. Come to find out it was an old tire that was in the rear. The tire looked fine tread wise but it was out of round. This might have been caused by plugs to repair a flat. I used to do this with older trucks I had and cant remember if I did it to this tire. But anyhow old bad tires will make the steering vibrate in these cars at 65mph and up.

The braking vibration is most likely warped rotors. Since you can drive through the other vibration it sounds like the front wheels are out of balance.
