How much do you think this damage will cost?

Post by pmonk »

I was rear ended at a yield sign, and the other driver has insurance, but everytime someone hits one of my used cars, I end up loosing out when they total it, because the value or whatever is low due to age and miles on an otherwise great car. I have put a lot of money in this car over the years, most recently 1600 in June, and I hate to think of them just cutting me a check for something like $2500 or less.

its got around 203,000 on it. I need to update the sig (unless I have to get rid of it)

I feel your pain. They will total it and chances are that they will try to mofo you on mileage.

Run it by a body shop and see what the "cash price" is to repair it. Insurance companies don't understand car guys, " Ya, it had 200k on it but I had rebuilt everything and it was perfect." Present them with a pile of receipts to help your cause on the settlement.

The only way I have ever come out close to even on such a thing is when I bought the car back from the insurance company after they totaled it. Even then I had to buy a new exhaust system since they ran it around the tow lot on a forklift and bent the crap out of it.

Sorry, 203K miles, it's totalled.
You car isn't worth more than 1500 or so and that's at LEAST $5000 in damages.

Yeah, sadly, that's what I figured. I will see what I can do with all the bills and all, but I guess I'll be getting out of owning Volvo's for a while :(
I'll post what I find out to help other's, won't find out till sometime tomorrow or the next day

Hi,

We just settled with the other guy's insurance company on Monday, and I flat told the insurance adjuster I felt shortchanged. We bought a 1996 850 June 1, 2007 had an engine put in by June 12 (old one blew a head gasket, and the former owner drove it for a month, ruining it internally). My son was minding his own business on the way to work July 2, and a genius suddenly decided to make a turn right in front of him. My son hit the guy's '95 Civic nearly head on at about 45-50mph. My son jumped out immediately, as the seat belt, airbag and crush zones worked flawlessly. His only injury was when the car slid into a light pole after the collision and his elbow hit the door. Other guy was hurt. We just bought an 850 GLT two days ago (also 1996), spent $823 on repairs and now have just under $5000 in it. We got $3700 for the previous one. Oh well. The new one has a sunroof and the premium sound system, as well as being a GLT.

it might be hard to take right now.. but in the long run.. Im guessing any other car would have caused more damage to the most valuable part of the car..... the driver!

Interesting that the other guys air bags did not deploy.

My wife hit someone from behind on the freeway back in Feb. Rain slick oily road. She just slid right into the back of the other persons car. Insurance totaled our car (95 850 GLT). it was all cosmetic damage parts total was less than $2000. but the labor and paint far exceeded the value of the car. We took the $$$. bought the cars back for less than $300. I then sold the car to a local indy volvo repair/body shop who wanted a loaner for his customers. The best part is that he had another car, same color that was hit from behind. :D

Everyone came out happy and safe.

Actually, the passenger airbag on the other car did deploy, but not the driver's side. The other guy also was apparently not wearing his seat belt, as he ended up on the passenger side.
