What is my 98 V70 XC Worth?

Post by erie2theworld »

I'm in the process of trying to sell my V70 XC. It is a 98, is in fair-good condition, runs fine, and has 192,000 miles. I looked up the value on KBB (5200 in fair condition) and posted the car on craigslist for $4990. I got a call from a "volvo expert" who said I was asking too much. I kindly asked what the car was worth, since i'd like to ask a fair price, and he said he had no idea. So, anyway, i figured you guys would know.

Yeah, 5 grand is a bit much for the miles, even if the car was in excellent shape...and you say it's in good-fair shape. Closer to 4 grand I would say is a fair price, but the car would have to not need any work. If it is so, then ask 4.5K. You can always go down, but never back up. Also depends on where you are...KBB I've just never trusted that much. I tend to look at what cars at certain miles have sold for on eBay Motors for a better indication of the market price.

FAR too much!
I PAY no more than $4500 for 98's with 100K miles these days.
Your car is a $1500 trade in IF it's in decent condition MAX.
Two weeks ago I paid $1700 for a 99 (albeit with a few problems) with 124K miles
FIXED (and this was a very decent one), it wholesaled for $3800.
Remember this was a '99 with 70K LESS miles and now was in very nice shape
Bottom line your car is not worth very much. If it was a FWD it would be worth more as no one would then have to worry about potential AWD problems.
You cannot use KBB or Edmunds for calculating a high mileage car, their computer can't do it. If you had 130K or 190K miles it would shoe the same for mileage, about -$1800. Try it, you'll see.
You also have to input average condition at best as no way a 190K mile Volvo will be in "good" condition.
I just did your car on Edmunds (closer to real life than KBB ), average condition, private party, $3300 and THEY TOO are optimistic on prices

I think if I can't get 3000 for it, it's worth more to me for utility reasons. Just to have a wagon around. Even if I don't drive it. It has never done me wrong.

Also, what are the problems with the AWD models? I haven't experienced any, and I have most of the service history which doesn't seem to show any service of the awd system of any sort. Any insight?

Thanks!

Mike
