When reversing out of my driveway or slowly driving over bumps there is a distinct rattling noise that comes from the rear of the car. It sounds like the spare wheel and/tools are loose in the trunk but they are not. I also thought maybe the exhaust was loose but this is secure too.
Anybody experience anything like this before??
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I've noticed in my car a rattle that comes from my sunroof. Try backing again while putting upward pressure on your sunroof glass. The sound drove me crazy because sound travels. I though it was coming from the rear as it was comng from on top. Good Luck.
unfortunately this was not the case. Would it be realistic to think that the rear suspension was out at 75K miles?

I noticed a rattle that was similiar and it was this shield that was bent and hitting the tailpipe over bumps...Easy fix., crawl under and bend it away from either of these items....May want to back up on a couple of large bricks or boards to raise the rear of the car, much easier to get under...Good Luck

I had the same problem;
This is an other poor design fault of volvo Engineer.
Cause: there is a bunch of fuel tubes near the rear LHS wheel arch; These tubes are held in place by a little PLASTIC clip. This clip is broken with time under vibration condition; When you car runs over a small hump, the tubes are knocking on the wheel arch panel and making noise.
Fix: Get a sheet of rubber wrap it around the tube at the location they would touch the wheel arch; secure the rubber sheet using a piece of cable-tie; the proble will be fixed.

First, as far as the sunroof goes, the bolts that hold the glass lid often come loose. Volvo came out with some updated bolts with lock washers.
The other noise could very well be the rear sway bar link rods. Get under the car, grab the link and push up and pull down on them.
