I need someones help. I have done alot of engine work, but very little on Volvo's, and they seem to be their own animal.
Question is, the 2000 v70 non turbo we have runs great except that when you come to a stop, then rpm goes way down to about 500 for a second, then goes right back up to 900 or so.....the normal idling speed. It will also do it if you rev the engine up and then quickly let your foot off of the gas, it plumets to 500 or slower, almost dies, but then goes right back up to normal speed. It has died on my wife a few times, always starts right back up. It hasn't ever died completly on me, but then i probably don't brake as hard as she does.
Other than the symptoms above it runs great. No hesitation on acceleration, smooth idle when idling. I thought it might be a leaking intake manifold gasket, but I don't hear any thing and tried spraying starter fluid around it and there wasn't any rpm change.
Any ideas out there?

Maybe not near the intake manifold but there are some other small vacuum hoses that are part of the PCV system. You might have a crack in one of these allowing unmetered air into the intake. Check them carefully. they should be air tight....your trick of using starter fluid is a good one. You can squirt some around hoses and hose elbows that look like they might be the cause to see if you get a surge. Oh, and check the condition of your air filter...a very dirty one could be chocking your air/fuel mix. Good luck and please report back as to what you found.

thanks for the reply.
There was a small white plastic tube that goes from the intake man. to the air cleaner. THat one is suspect, but cant find anything major yet. I looked at the air filter and it was ok. I even tried it without the air filter. Checked the diverter to make sure everything was clear. Tried pulling off the white tube above, no change. I'll just have to keep checking.
I might be full of it, but I thiink this started after they reprogramed the car for the ETS software upgrade. But not sure. It has been doing it for awhile, but it hasn't gotten worse.

Ah...the ETS software. You probably need to have your ECU reset to re-learn your driving style after the upgrade (called the "adaptives"). Seems the dealer would do this for you if you go in and complain. I was just about to post that your issue sounded suspiciously like ETM issues.

my 2001 v70 is doing the exact same thing, mine is a 5 speed manual-i'm taking it in this morning for repair. I've noticed that since the low idle problem my a/c has been acting poorly-cold for short periods of time then blowing outside temp air, can't even keep condensation off the windshield most of the time.

Hey guys, I have a non-turbo 2001 s60. I'm having these idle problems, except when I'm at a stoplight, I get the message: "Low oil pressure, stop engine". My rpms dip to like 5-600 when i'm slowing down, then they go up to about 800. The message flickers on and off while the idle is at 800. I have cleaned my ETM myself, I'm on the verge of replacing it. However, I have heard bad seals/gaskets in the oil pan can cause this problem too. I was also experiencing the same symptoms with the A/C that ted_goetsch was experiencing. Someone help me! I'm a college student on a tight budget. I don't want to end up replacing something that I don't need to.

andrew: if the idle dips to 500 or little less then the oil message is normal. The slow engine speed on a fully warmed up engine will cause oil pressure to go below the value that triggers the light and message when nothing is wrong with engine.
The ETM replacement is a good idea and should do the trick.
How long since ETM was cleaned and was battery left disconnected for 10 or more minutes after cleaning. The batt reset may make a difference and might be worth a try before you give up on the ETM.

Jimmy57: After the idle dips down to 500 the light comes on, then the idle bounces back up; the light goes off. But the light still manages to flicker on and off even when the idle is at 750-800. I disconnected the battery before the ETM cleaning a few weeks ago. I never actually completely removed the ETM, I left the wires connected and cleaned it thoroughly. I have performed a few battery resets since then.
