When I got my 94 Volvo 850 T5 in may, the PO was running castro dino oil. The car had 188K on it with a slow oil leak from the front crank seal. I switched to MaxLife and it made the oil leak worse. I ended up going to Mobil 1 High Mileage 10-40 and the leak as pretty much stopped at this point. This is the best oil I have ever used.

5W30 synthetic year round. Zero leaks, always use either a Mann or Amsoil filter. I usually buy the cheapest synthetic oil on sale. 220,000KM and I don't have to add a drop of oil in 5000 KM.

I may switch to Amsoil through their preferred customer plan and extend my intervals from 5000 KM to 9000KM after I do a UOA on my current group 3 synthetic at that interval. Is 0w30 not recommended for my car year round, or just for the winter or perhaps not at all?

ANY turbo oil recommendation

Post by George » Sun Dec 13, 2009 10:32 am

Hello, FYI Everybody: Don't overlook the ACEA ratings on the bottle. The "A3/B3" designates the presence of high temperature turbo charger bearing additves. Mobil1 0W-30 and Castrol 0W-30 European Formula are two examples- there are others. The occasional smoke-at-startup of a 1999 in the family stopped over two years ago when A3/B3 oil was used. A 2002 in the family has yet to smoke. They don't cost a penny more; you just have to find them. Good luck, George

Just was wondering if doing an oil change includes cleaning the TURBO on the 850T? If there were any leaks into the turbo would that cause any smoking at higher revs?
Is Quaker State high mileage 10W30 a recommended oil and what is people`s sucess in using this one?
Do people use any extra additives or seal conditioners in the oil change routine? I am on the west coast where we usually don`t drop below 38-40F.

thanks!

There's a very passionate debate about oil/fuel additives going on right now. Personally I am against them but here is the link to the thread so you can read over what people have said and form your own opinion -> http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 75&start=0

As far as I know, generally the turbo is not cleaned out during an oil change.

Also, for Turbo's synthetic is preferable and many members suggest Mobile 1.

I know I'm a few years late, but I have a curve ball for you all.

How do you all feel about Rotella T6?

I used Shell Rotella T6 from Walmart in my old (somewhat missed) 2001 Subaru Forester. The guy I bought it from (my brother) used nothing else. Walmart balked at putting it in at oil changes, I always had to sign a waiver. But they acknowledged how sweet the engine sounded at idle, this with 191,000 miles. Alas, due to less than optimal stability at high speeds, I wrecked it and have bought a Volvo V40 to replace it with. IIRC, the Rotella T6 I bought was 10-40W.

Anybody who watches Scotty Kilmer's videos on YouTube knows that there will be a new classification of motor oil out in May of this year. It will be 0-16W and will have passed all kinds of rigorous testing. It sounds like the thing to get. I've considered using Mobil1 0-20W, they have a high mileage version (my V40 has 120,000) that contains engine seal conditioners.

I've used this in everything including a splash lube based lawn mower. I've never had a failure that was caused by lubrication. There has always been a different factor.

Frankly I think lots of oils are just fine. People often forget or choose not to change their oil and filter - then complain about the oil. Now a days, provided the oil pump and passages (o-rings in the pan?) are good, and your level & pressure is good, I think you'll rarely find an engine with lube based issues.
