2000 XC-SE Angle Gear Question

I bought my 2000 XC SE in August 2006. In October 2006 the angle gear crashed and I replaced it at a Volvo dealer for $3100. I also put 4 new tires on it just to be safe. I crawl under it once a month and check for leaks but so far so good, after about 14 months. But I never drive this car out of town because it stranded me before, and I'm worried it will do it again.
Am I being too cautious? I really like the Volvo in every way. It's a great car and runs good in our Wyoming snow and ice. But I'm worried that angle gear will crash again and I'll have to fork out another $3100. I have considered putting a new set of tires on the car every year just to make sure that they are all the same circumference
Somebody put me out of my misery. Can you ever trust a 2000 XC SE again once the angle gear has gone out? Should I buy a Honda?
