2000 XC-SE Disconnect AWD and make it FWD

Post by Greybeard »

I've read on-line about people saying that if the angle gear is so much of a problem, just disconnect the drive shaft to the rear wheels and make the 2000 XC-SE a FWD car. Sounds good to me. I can live without another $3000 repair bill.
BUT, I haven't actually read of anyone doing this, and if so, did it work out okay. I asked one of the mechanics at my Volvo dealership about this and he said, "Oh no, that would make the code lights go off".???? I can put some electrician tape over any lights on my dash.
Stories of success with this procedure, and pictures of how to disengage the AWD would be appreciated. I'm ready to do surgery to my car and make it the reliable Volvo it was intended to be.
Thanks in advance.

I've done it and it doesn't do anything but make the mpg go up a bit, and then cause your fronts to spin where they hadn't before..starting off on wet etc. Do you have a problem or is it just preventative maintenance? BTW, no codes will go off...most the time Volvo techs have their heads so far up their exhaust pipe they are only trying to get money per dealer order.

My son's 99' S70 AWD turbo was making a loud noise under the car towards the front part of the drive shaft. I had it checked out at the Volvo dealer and they said the front U joint or bearing was making the noise and it is $1200 for a whole new drive shaft. I asked if they could take the drive shaft off and they didn't know so they checked with Volvo factory and they said it could be removed and so the dealer removed it and no codes will show up which they haven't. I took the front bearing apart and it is dry and what grease there was was hard and dry. I am in the process of replacing the front bearing now and will reinstall the drive shaft. However, it has snowed and iced three times in the 3 weeks we have had the shaft off and it would be good for that type of driving. If it can't be repaired the S70 will probably be a front wheel drive.

If it's JUST the front, that CAN be replaced and you should be fine
