Ticking rattle in 2002 xc70 dash

I have an intermittent ticking rattle sound coming from the center of the dash on my 2002 XC70 that's about to drive me CRAZY. Sometimes it stops completely...other times it is almost constant. I'm thinking of taking the center speaker cover off and testing for loose items. Often I can recreate the sound by tapping the steering wheel. Does not seem to be connected to outside temperature. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Probably one of the AC (distribution) flaps is stuck and the motor is constantly moving

No, can't be that. The sound can be created when the car is off. If I bump the steering wheel and or the corner of the dash, it rattles. I'll just keep the music cranked.
