1996 850 Turbowagon

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

1996 850 Turbowagon

Post by Nick'sTurbowagon »

Ordered IPD's Stage 3 kit in December. Got the exhaust system, installed easily, works and sounds fantastic.

However, they are out of the Mitsubishi 18T Turbos and will not get them in until March. They said that they are waiting on a shipment from Mitsubushi direct from Japan. Has anyone else had the same problem?

While I am waiting have changed all engine mounts, all hoses to silicone, added sway bars, installed rebuilt steering rack, cleaned and repainted the frame.

What else should I be doing while waiting?

Took off front bumper and got today Front Fog Lamp Kit Part #3524921-8 for $200 from my local dealer. Plan on installing them next week. Will take pics and let you know how it goes.

Oh boy that sounds like it's going to be a riot.

You should look into relocating your Horns and cutting the plastic beam out, so you can have better airflow to the radiator.

Do you have any kind of performance air filter or cone on it?

Sounds great! If you haven't already done it, replace your PCV system (oil trap as well as all of your lines to and from the PTV Valve- and make sure it's cleaned out as well). Other than this, you might consider higher flow fuel injectors. You might check over in the for sale section of www.volvospeed.com for these as well as possible the 18T turbo if you don't want to wait on it from IPD. Good luck and definitely takes some pictures and post up!

Nick, MIJ and others: do you have to reprogram the ECU when you install that larger turbo?

Matt...if you don't get a new "tune," (reprogramming the ECU) it's best to pull the negative line off of the battery for 10 minutes or so (have your radio code handy) to reset the adaptives....this way, the ECU relearns from scratch how you drive with the new turbo. Unfortunately, adding a new/bigger turbo without a new tune really doesn't do much from what I understand as the ECU is not set up to take advantage of the larger turbo.

Got the Turbo Wagon back up and running by the end of March 2008, It has been running excellent. I did move my horns to under the battery tray area, put on the rear wing, and renamed it the Turbo R Wagon.

I recently replaced the alternator, (helpful hint, take out the ECU box to reinstall the bolts that go through the holes in the pulley. Much easier to align the bolts with room to spare.).

I would recommend IPD's Stage III to anyone who wants the upgraded horsepower but is not trying to push the envelope.

I will post some picture this week.

My next project is repainting the set of 17" Volans that I picked up for $400, and buying new 215/45 R17 tires.

I am thinking of upgrading the front brakes to the 302's the next time I need pads and rotors.
