Had the check engine code, PO413, show up on an OBD2 reader. Says that it is a secondary injection switching valve A circuit open.
Anyone have this code before? Not sure what the problem is from.

P0413: Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve A Circuit Open
Sounds like it may have something to do with your air pump. I'm not familiar with them, but I would check the wiring on it if I were you. You can find it in the picture below along with the relay. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't really know a lot about that system. Hopefully this will help a little.

I have the same code, is your air pump running when you stop at red lights, and at the drive thru?

Sounds like a very sick tiny jet engine warming up (front left of the hood) you can hear it when your drivers window is down, usually mine happens when I stop at a drive thru window, or a red light just off of the interstate. Haven't yet, wait for warmer weather to take out the air pump, and diagnose the problem. The check valve has probably failed and water has gotten into your air pump. I'm 99% that's my problem.

OK, now I know what you're talking about...I have heard the "tiny jet sound" as the
car would idle in my driveway.....It would come on for about 10 seconds, then turn off....
Also, went through service records, and previous owner had the air pump replaced May 2007, along with the air pump check valve. (At Volvo service center). Any way to determine what has failed without buying new parts?

Not that I know of, I haven't done this tear down before, my 2 previous Volvos were 850's and didn't have this problem, there is a good step by step fix in the repair database. I would ckeck with MIJ or some of the Senior members they know more about this than I do>

You just need to make sure this is it. Have someone start it and then listen for it right under your battery. It's strange that if this is it it died so early. I'm at almost 160K miles and on the original air pump without issue (of course I drilled 2 small holes in mine as a preventative measure). It could be that they really never replaced it but did a band aid fix (squirting oil) into the pump motor to lubricate the bearings). Check to see that the SAS valve (up near the driver's side firewall...a mushroom shaped brass valve. It should still be shiny bright if it was just replaced last year. Usually, it's this little gizmo that causes condensation to be pulled into the air pump.

Problem found.....The electrical connection was loose....On the relay located above the radiator (someone called this the CONTROLLER on a air pump fix site). There is a clamp that was not engaged all the way.....pressed it back in, made sure it was secure,
Reset check engine code with OBD2 reader, and check engine light stayed off!
May still drill 2 small holes in the air pump as MIJ suggested to avoid pump failure in the future.....I was going to let it go if it was a bad air pump, no emission testing in Michigan. From what I have found out about the air pump, that is the main benefit, and only for a couple minutes until the engine is warm...All is good! Thanks.
