1997 850R Problems with the turbo
The mileage is 150,000. I had a bad turbo and replaced it. The mechanic that put it on had one of his workers do most of the work. Anyway the car still smoked after it was installed. The mechanic told me that this was normal and the smoke would disappear eventually. 500 miles in the smoke got worse and I started to smell oil through the vents. I looked under the car and saw that an oil leak had developed right in the area of the turbo. So I took the car back to the mechanic and had him look at it. He told me that the fire trap was clogged and he cleaned it out for me. However there was fresh and dried oil all over the air tube that runs inside of the turbo on its topside from the air filter. There was fresh oil underneath the turbo as well which had run down from the top. Both the engine seals were fine and had been replaced just recently. Just to be on the safe side not only did I check them before I left the house but he checked them as well when I got to his shop. When they were putting the PCV system back together and connecting it to the turbo I realized that they had put the hoses on wrong. Now that explained all of the oil that had built up into the turbo. Even after this go around, I am still not sure if they got all the connections right because when I step on the gas hard the turbo has a tough time kicking in. The car feels like its fighting itself. It rumbles a bit then slowly accelerates. After 200 miles it still smokes. I was told to put some valve sealant into it by the mechanic and did it. Th car still smokes and if I let it idle and step on the gas a puff of the bluish stuff comes out. Does anyone have any advice as to what's wrong? Does anyone have a diagram I can use to compare those connections and or tell me what I can do to fix this? Or recommend a good mechanic in the northern or central jersey area who knows these cars inside and out?
Has your oil consumption gone up a lot? Do like everyone else in the forum, put some Seafoam in the crankcase to clean out the all the crap.
