V70 shuts off randomly

1. 99 V70 2.4L non turbo
2. correct forum?
3. 110K miles
4. no mods
5. shuts off randomly while driving, happens mostly when AC runs, sometimes only accessories turn off like radio and AC etc.

My wife has this down to a science, she smacks the steering column and this usually gets the accessories back on, but if the car dies all together she rolls to a stop, no power brakes, and starts it back up.

I have taken all the steering column covers off and nothing is loose, all connections are clean. Any ideas?? I heard it could be the coil in the column that loses contact as the column spins is this true? I rebuilt one in an old Landcruiser but I know nothing about this Volvo.

That was a big hint for us, thanks! It's probably the start switch assembly (the electrical portion of the ignition key lock), as they get along in years strange things happen to the vehicle's electrical system (sometimes the accessories act as if possessed, the car dies randomly, etc). The part runs about $35-45. Labor is 0.4 hours by the book rate.[/i]
