Hi, I have an 2005 XC90. I had my front brake pad replaced and rotors serviced recently and afterwards, I have an intermittent chirping noise coming from the brakes while driving at low speed. Applying light braking changes the pitch of the noise and hard braking will make the noise go away.
Can anyone suggest a possible cause?
Thanks

Sounds like they aren't seated properly or they didn't use the special grease on the back of the pads. Is your '05 still under warranty? Did you have the brake job done at the dealer? If so then take it back and tell them they still haven't finished their job. All work done at the dealer is under warranty with Volvo parts warranted for a year.

Does it matter greatly if the pads are aftermarket or OEM.

Yes, it could. I learned a long time ago to stick with OEM brake pads...most others squeak.

Thank you MIJ, I am a new owner of XC90 and learning as I go.
xc90incanada, I had the same problem.
I have a 2005 XC90 as well. The car is on its third set of brakes in just three years - and finally, the dealer brouiht ina a Volvo rep to comprehensively look at the premature brake wear problem as well as the chirping noise you describe.
It turns out that there are several sizes of brake pads/ rotors that are used on XC90s. The wrong size was out on my car a year ago - and they wore out in just a year of use. Then the same incorrect size was put on again - and then I got the chirping noise.
The dealer is now installing the correct size for me, free of charge, and said the noise problem will go away.
I suggest you have the brake pads/ rotors examined closely to make sure they are right for your particular XC90 model and year - I think there's confusion in service shops about which kind goes on which XC90 car.

They should refund you for the first 2 sets of incorrect pads and the labor to put them on as well...this still doesn't make up for the $ you spent, the annoyance you had to endure and the time you've wasted, but it would be a good gesture just the same. If they haven't offered to do this, insist on it.

I agree. Unfortunately, this dealership/ service center has been nothing but a headache for us. They don't make gestures like that or give us the benefit of the doubt when we have concerns about the car.MadeInJapan wrote:They should refund you for the first 2 sets of incorrect pads and the labor to put them on as well...this still doesn't make up for the $ you spent, the annoyance you had to endure and the time you've wasted, but it would be a good gesture just the same. They claim to have turned things around, customer service-wise, but we shall see how this whole brake replacement goes. I'm just relieved to have gotten to the bottom of the brake problem -and hopeful that we'll no longer be buying brakes annually.
