96 850 turbo, what heads are compatable?

Post by Kel »

Hello all, I just picked up a 96 850 turbo basket case. The head is warped and I have a 97 850r motor i could use, but am not sure how compatable this motor is with the 96 turbo. I dont have the turbocharger from the R. I also found a head from a 98 v70 and am wondering if this is compatable as well. Thanks, Kel

Why not get a machine shop to true the head on the original motor and keep the other motors in tact? I'm really not sure which heads fit which engines...I know they all would have to be original size of your engine 2.3L only goes with a 2.3L, etc., but nothing beyond that.

Oh, by the way, you do know that you have to either get a cam holding tool or build one to take the head off in a way that you don't fubar your cam settings/positions, right?

I do have the special tools. I just did this work on my wifes 97 850 and made them for it. So when I saw a car on Craigslist for cheap needing the same repair I picked it up. It came with the receipt from the garage they took it to. They put in a new radiator, and removed the head. It was warped, so they recommended an engine replacement for a huge amount of money. By the way they took the head out it looked like they werent very familiar with Volvos. I still may take the head in to be straightened, But the motor I have was only $100. I still have to remove it though. Although I am not sure if it will work with the regular turbo.

You might ask your question over on http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/ There are a lot more people there who rebuild engines- they would know.

let me tell you this,i work on 850's daily and i did many interchanges, you can use even nonturbo heads on a turbo block,as long as you change the exhaust manifold, and the intake manifold provided you will use your old engine's.don't ruin your complete engine , the R engine is expensive, even though it's 5234t6 but ther's no difference in the head nor in the block from the hpt turbo or T-5 that is 5234t3 so you can interchange it.I'm not sure if in your area you have a pick aoart yard where you can get a head for 50-100 $, or you can mill yours if it's in good shape.
