When I took my crank pulley off today there was no guide pin on the crank. Are these routinely left off? The timing belt has been changed 3 times, once by a dealer and twice by a very reputable shop.
And the problem is.....I apparently have the pulley on crooked because I can see the belts coming from the crank wobble. I know I have to get that straightened out, but should I have a guide pin in there or is it okay without it.
Also, is there a good way to hold the pulley to tighten the bolt without a special factory tool?
Thanks, Mark

maybe the guide pin is stuck in the pulley and that is why you have a wobble. I just seem to remember a keyway.

Is it possible you have dropped the key? I have done that before as they aren't always a tight fit.

I didn't drop it because I was being careful to look for it. And, the groove in the pulley was about 45 degrees away from the groove in the crank. So, it couldn't have been there. I will pick one up.
Bill, do you know of a good way of holding the pulley to tighten the bolt? I can set my compressor at 45-50 lbs and use an impact. Will that make it close enough or is there a better way?

The way I was taught, by an old time mechanic, was to remove the starter and jam a screwdriver in one of the flywheel teeth. He had a screwdriver that was long enough to reach the floor but I had to find someone to hold mine in place.

Bill,
Thanks for the suggestion although I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try it....something slips and I chip a tooth and I'm really in a mess. I'm going to see if the local Volvo shop has trick that they use that I'm brave enough to try:-)

They will use a Crankshaft Holder, tool #5284, which fits on the pulley and fastens on to the belt tensioner stud.

Bill,
Thank you. Yes, I read about the tool...trying to find a substitute. I spoke to the shop today and now they have me confused. Is the "guide pin" built into the end of the crank shaft? That's what the shop made it sound like. They said it was piece that couldn't fall out. I was looking for a loose pin or key. I'm going to pull it apart tomorrow and I'd like to get it right.
Thanks,
Mark
