OBD-II

*sigh*

In a world awash with OBD-ii tools I have know idea what's what.

First of all my car is a 1995. But it has a OBD-ii port.

How is that possible?

I don't have a shot of it.
But it's right up out of frame of the top left of this picture.

In all of the OBD-ii tools two stuck out for me.

Which one is better?

The top one is cheaper but the scan gauge seems like a good investment.

Could be the port works...also could be that it doesn't (in other words it is there by design but due to the under-the-hood diagnostic boxes, it's not hooked up). Go to Autozone or other autoparts store and test their different scanners to make sure it's connected before spending $ on a scanner yourself. If it works, most any generic scanner will work fine.

My 95 850 has the OBDII port also and I wondered why a 95 would have it as I was under the impression that 1996 was the first year for the OBDII. My only guess is that maybe these are late 1995 Volvo's? I have never had the chance or given any thought to try it. Maybe I will this evening.

My '95 has the OBD11 only as it was made after September and is classed as a '96 model.

Many '95 cars were turned out with both units. Some were connected to both and some were only connected to the engine compartment unit.

I miss that old style of diagnostics.

yes, and it does give you more data and is more versatile- will actually turn off codes to SRS and ECC codes which the OBD scanners cannot read or deal with.

My 94 has obd 2 and obd 1 and they both work! I just use the obd 1, but ive ordered a obd 2 cable for my laptop.

I have been contemplating the purchase of an OBDII software with hardware for a laptop. Would you be willing to share which OBDII software you use? Thanks

Ive only ordered my obd 2 cord for my laptop (e-bay). A good friend of mine has software (purchased from e-bay) that I plan to copy. Im not exactly sure of the brand of software that he has but I know it will read live data and codes for sure. I don't think it's an overly sophisticated program but it will serve me fine. Once I have my setup together I'll do a review on it and let everyone know how a cheap obd 2 laptop scanner works.
