850 GLT 1995 crashed

Post by Mersin2008 »

Hello

I have a problem with a 1995 volvo 850. One night i was tired and i crashed the car in some kind of a bump.Something beneath the car was scratched and the airbag popped. The car isn't mine and my friend, who owns the car, took it to a shop where a mechanic told him the car was crashed with avout 60-80km/h and the engine support, gearbox and a few other parts have been pushed backwards with about 15 cm/6 inches. Also he told me the car is shaking heavily while driven. The night it happened i drove the car for another half hour and there was no shaking involved, and i doubt the nature of the damage beneath the car.Can anyone who knows these parts of the frame tell me if such damage is possible when the speedometer wasn't even moving, cause i was barelly moving the car when it happened. And another thing that puzzles me , after the airbag went off, are the sensors ok or do they need replacing/repairing along with the steering wheel.
I hope to hear some advice soon.

Absolutely no way to cause that much damage if you went over a "bump" with the "speedometer barely moving".

Absolutely no way to have the airbags deploy if you went over a "bump" with the "speedometer barely moving".

So, there isn't much that makes sense here.

Could that be the bump was moving?

Did both the passenger's side airbag and the steering wheel airbag deploy? If it was only the steering wheel then something is wrong. The entire system (Perhaps short of the SIPS) should deploy simultaneously.

The seat belt reels will also need to be replaced. They have a one shot explosive charge that tightens the seat belts when the air bags deploy.

I hope to hear some advice soon.

1. start shopping for another 850 to replace the one you wrecked. the car is totaled, replace it.
2. don't drive while sleepy or drunk ever again. how do you know how fast you were going..you couldn't even keep the car on the road! lucky you didn't kill somebody.

Thank you for reassuring me that what i had been told is not entirely true, and for the other posts, i was tired but not that much to endanger other peoples lives, the bump wasn't moving and i hit it because the driver seat was very low for me, it was set for the owner of the car and i didn't want to mess with it.
Oh, only the steering wheel airbag deploied.
Is it possible that the car was hit before repaired by a regular mechanic, not by one who knew what to do exactly and now when i hit it i started a chain reaction to displace the parts beneath it?

I may be wrong but doesn't the car need to be going a minimum speed, like 25 mph in order for the airbags to deploy?

i don't know the car but i guess not after what i experienced.
today i found out that the airbag sesonrs are positioned not in the metal part of the front bumper like i thaught but on the longeron and thus in this case it was a favourable condition for the airbag to go off.

Either way, once the airbag(s) deploy, it is quite costly to have them replaced which can only be done by certified techs. I have heard of costs being around $4,000. That alone would total the car, not including whatever other damage it has.

True at the dealer, but the driver's side airbag is sold on eBay all the time for a considerable savings...buy one, put it in and have the SRS light reset by the dealer.
