460GLE cuts-out and dies

Post by 460gleH628FTA » Sun Dec 14, 2008 3:04 am

I have just purchased this '91 460GLE (1721 petrol, carb, no turbo) to replace my 340.
It keeps cuting-out and dying. No stuttering or spluttering just stops working. The AA say the rotor-arm is shorting, but there is no scorch/arcing marks, but replacing is a temporary cure. Low-fuel warning seems to be faulty as well. I suspect the Ignition module, but I think it has already been replaced once before. Is it possible the two faults are connected? There is no diagnostic module fitted.

Welcome to MVS...sorry that there are not many members with your car...I don't know much about it either, but I can comment that many times it's more than one issue that causes things. Do you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn your key to the on position? Check all of your grounding straps and main cable off of your battery too. I had a friend with an early model 740 and her issue (same as your symptoms) was a broken vacuum hose near the engine- check those too....and good luck!

There should be a data link connector on the front nearside inner wing near the air filter.

To use it:

Accessing.

Open data link cover.
Insert system selector cable, which is stored in cover top, into socket 2.
Switch ignition on .
Press test button for 0.5 to 1 second.
Count LED flashes.
Trouble codes consist of a sequence of three groups of flashes.
A 3 second pause seperates each group.
Note trouble codes. Compare with trouble code table. For example
1 flash 3sec pause 2 flashes 3 sec 1 flash
This = a code of 121.

Trouble codes must be accessed and faults rectified before codes can be erased.

Erasing.

Open data link connector cover.
Insert system selector cable in socket 2.
Switch ignition on .
Press test button for 5 seconds minimum.
Release button. Wait until LED illuminates.
Press button again for 5 seconds minimum.
Ensure trouble codes have been erased.
The ECM fault memory can also be erased by disconnecting the battery.

Is there any sign that a DLC has been fitted and removed? Are there any unexplained wires lying around in the area where it should be?

Sometimes these units stop working and are removed as 'useless bits of kit'. If there are wires you should be able to pick up a DLC at a scrap yard and refit it.

As you suspect the ignition amplifier do you need the data for testing it?

Bill.

There is mno indication one was ever fitted.
If you have the information on the ignition module (Bendix 456439 S101900419A), it would be useful,
regards and seasonal wishes

Sorry for the delay but the test data for your ignition amplifier is not in my book. I have checked with contacts in the Volvo world and none of them have the info.

On your engine they would just substitute a known good amplifier and see how it went.
