the temp gauge in my 1989 240dl

the temp gauge in my nonturbo 1989 240dl shoots up to the orange and at the same time the heater starts to blow cold air. this only happens when the car has sat over night or for a few hours. any ideas??

Check the thermostat as it may be sticking closed.

These cars have a temperature compensation board and yours is bad. You can remove and put a jumper in and the temperature gage will read actual temperature. I did with mine. IPD sells this little jumper wire for $15. They used to have the instructions posted.
