I am currently having this same problem on my 99 S70 [Clunking transmission]. Could the PNP be the culprit here too? I am also having a problem with my front O2 sensor. I get an error code talking about the heating element not working, and another code saying there is no activity from the front sensor.
Sometimes the car runs like crap and wants to stall, other times it slams when it shift into second, and still other times I floor it and it won't go over 25 mph. Also, when it does that, there are popping sounds that I think are coming from the exhaust.
Man, I hate this car.
Possible ETM issue on a '99 V70

Could be several problems at once...the only going 25 when you floor it could be the dreaded ETM issue (your car is a '99), which still may be under warranty.

We have a special section in the forum about the ETM but you can find more info here: www.vexedvolvo.org Your car is covered for 10 years or 200K miles (whichever came first- from the day it was placed in service).

Now that is the best news I have heard in a while! I went to the site you suggested and read the symptoms to my wife, who drives the car, and she said those symptoms were exactly what she experienced. Sweet! Now to see how well my dealer will stand behind their product.

This is only in regards to the '99 ~ '01 (on S80's '02) ETM, but if you are past your warranty period, there is a new product out that may be your "life of your car" solution: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=17820

Well hopefully they will cover it. Here is an update. Yesterday I got under the hood and took the airbox out. Then I cleaned all the connectors under there. There were three... one that goes to something by the turbo (the connector was caked in grime), the one to the upstream O2 sensor, and one that goes into the tranny. The 02 plug has split casings on two of the wires!! I taped it up as best I could. Put everything back together and reconnected the battery. Check engine, upshift, and SRS lights still on, but the car ran fine. I made an appt at the Volvo dealer in Salt Lake City for the 26th of Dec.
I also noticed that the throttle sticks at a certain point as you press it to the floor. Nothing too bad, just a little point of stiction as you pass through the range of the throttle (the wife doesn''t even notice it, but I do). Is this another symptom of the ETM?

There should be no restriction...if anything everything will feel smooth but either you don't go or there's surging. Your problem may not be ETM related at all...guess we'll see after your report from the dealer.

Well, I have an interim report... I went to Autozone to have the codes read, and here is what they found.
P0751 Shift Solenoid A CKT performance or stuck off
P0731 Gear ratio 1 incorrect
P1618 Aux input output
P0134 O2 sensor no activity bank 1 sensor 1
So, do I need a new shift solenoid and O2 Sensor? The one in there is less than a year old. Perhaps there is a problem with the wiring harness? After all, there are exposed wires on the vehicle side of the O2 plug.
