I've done it on my '04 V70 with no issue. Your car should be set up the same. No filter...you need the special JWS-3309 tranny fluid...Volvo sells it (almost $20 a quart) and also Toyota (much cheaper at $4 or $5 a quart)...just ask for their Type IV fluid that goes in an AW (Aisin Warner) 5 speed automatic. Mobil makes it for everyone and you can also buy it on line (link is in the write-up I'm linking to). Here is the write up of how to do it...: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 1650#31650

Any reason not to switch up to Mobil 1 Synthetic when doing the flush. I did the same flush on my 850 and will be doing my XC90 at 45K (just to be safe). I thought these came from the factory with synthetic, is that not correct?

All 5 speed auto's by A-W use JWS-3309 spec fluid. Switching it to Mobil1 synthetic will mess that transmission up. That said, Mobil-3309 would be an excellent choice in that case. Just check your owner's manual to make sure of the fluid but as far as I know, besides those with the GM transmission, the A-W (Aisin-Warner's) take the newer fluid. If you have a GM transmission and it calls for Dexron-III then yeah, the Mobil1 Synthetic ATF would be fine.

Thanks,
That will save me a lot of $$$$$. The mobil 3309 is I think 1/3 the price of the synthetic. :D

Once you start changing it you should be on a 30~40K mile change interval. That said, I waited until 50K miles on our V70 and I flushed the S70 as soon as I bought it at 98K miles (I had no idea if it had ever been flushed before).

So I am going to do the XC90 flush in the next 2 weeks, a couple of questions.

Is the transmission drain plug the same size as on the the 850 and will the oil plug washers fit?

Also, MIJ, I saw another xc90 post about an 05 but it was with the V8, do you have the refill/spec pdf's for the 5 cyl?

Has anyone done this yet on an xc90.

Last question, is it dumb to think that I can run one hose from the radiator to a discard bucket and the detached hose connect to a coupler and another hose and put that in a gallon container of new fluid? Will there be enough suction for it to drain and pull in at the same time?

Thanks

2 hoses won't work- it will not be drawn in. Now there is a machine that does both hoses but you're talking about paying someone for a flush and my local place with that machine didn't have the fittings for a Volvo- just fill up through the transmission dip stick tube- you'll need a long funnel with a flexible hose on it (auto zone sells them). The drain plug on our V70 was the same size as the 850 and S70. I would guess it's the same on yours. The procedure is the same on the 5 cylinder as outlined in the repair database write-up here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?p=31653 The only difference on yours is that you have to take off the plastic splash guard under the engine before the drain plug is exposed. Here is the write-up on the procedure from VADIS:

Thanks MIJ,

As I'm thinking about it, do I even need to drain the pan first, can I just pump out 2 quarts and fill 2 quarts until it comes back out clear? Does draining the pan just make it go faster?
