850 turbo 1994 Missing when going up hills

Post by shutterbugstudio »

1994 850 turbo. I was doing about 55 up a hill yesterday and pushed on the gas and the car seemed to miss sporadically. Didn't seem to get up and go like usual.Doesn't seem to do it on level ground, although this is my wife's car and I don't drive it often. Just looking for a place to start my trouble shooting.

Is the Check Engine Light on? If so there are definitely stored codes in port A-2. Even if the Check Engine Light is not on there may be codes that can help us narrow it down for you.

If you have not read codes before here are the directions:

When was the last tuneup? If may simply be ready for new spark plugs, wires, rotor and a cap.

My first inclination is a breakdown in the ignition system under load. Light acceleration and cruising speeds may not cause symptoms at all.
Plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Could possibly be clogged air filter. Basic "Stage 1".

Start with these very basic items and I would bet they will solve your issues. Women don't seem to push a car like we do and likely wouldn't notice. My son thought I was nuts when I told him "all you have to do is listen, she (the car) will talk to you". We all know how women listen when it comes to cars.

I had this problem. Started on the highway while going up hills and then was just doing it all over the place. My MAF connector was terribly corroded (engine could be killed from an idle by simply pulling on the MAF's cable while it was attached), but that didn't fix it. (Although it might have fixed the stalling problems I was having.) Eventually it was determined that the Cam Position Sensor was bad.

The guy who started this thread is having a similar problem. He still hasn't found his solution... :-/ (He's thinking MAF.)

So, I say check ignition (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil), check MAF, and check CPS.
