Hi my friends,
I have a 1998 S70 GLT.
I accidentally broke the fuel filler cap a few weeks ago. I managed to put the cap back on with tapes, and "Check Engine" light was not on at that point.
A few days ago, when I was about to park my car, the "Check Engine" light was suddenly on. I thought that the cap was now completely broken, so I bought a compatible new cap from AutoZone, an autoparts store. The new cap works well, but the light is still on.
My car is still running great. I don't feel anything unusaual after the light was on.
Any comments on my problem? Is this "Check Engine" alert a false one?
Thanks!
"Check Engine" light on, is it a false alarm?

If your CEL is on, Check It Out!
Why wouldn't you? It could be anything.
It probably IS just complaining about
your gas cap, but you never know...
Cheap insurance.

Checking it out means having your codes read. Most any auto parts store will do this for you through your OBD port (in your arm rest). When you get the codes, write them down and post them back and then we'll be able to help you with things better.

Mine came on a while ago for no apparent reason. I had it checked out by a local garage with a code reader but could not find a fault. He couldn't put it out either so I thought I'd live with it for a while and take it to a dealer when I had the time.
A few weeks later I borrowed the battery out of my V70 to start another car and when I reconnected it the light had gone off and hasn't shown since.
May be worth a go!!
