Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 2000 Resistance in Gear Selector when switching gears

Post by Lizzie »

2000 S80 2.9 188,000 miles. One month ago had timing belt replaced along with 4 brake pads and rotators.
Returned from a vacation, car was parked outside in cold weather for 6 days. Drove it home yesterday and to and from work today no problems. This evening 2 hours after returning from work weather was wet but warmer I had resistance in the gear selector when going from P to R to D.
I can get the selector to move but it takes a firm hand.
Do you have any thoughts? Thank you in advance for any guidance.

If you park on a slope the weight of the car puts pressure on the parking pawls in the transmission and makes it harder to shift out of Park. When parking it is best to set the parking brake first, release the foot brake to let the parking brakes take the load, then shift to Park. This works well on my car.
