02 XC70 Shifter stuck in park

Post by Bear74 »

When we started the car today, it wouldn't shift out of park. Key seems to work fine no sticking or anything like that. It seems like maybe the trigger button on the shifter isn't working properly, or maybe the switch that tells if your pushing the brake?

Any help would be appreciated

Does your car have a place next to the shifter where you can use the cars key to release the lock on the shifter. If it does I would try that first. If you can free the shifter and it operates alright than I would look at sending unit near brake pedal.

If you are stuck on an incline this could be your problem...try to turn your key and also your steering wheel AND put your foot on the brake (emergency brake off) and see if it will engage.

Are you the origional owner? Do you use the cup holder beside the radio for softdrinks/java?

I had the same problem with my 01 2.4T. After much frustration, I pulled the center console. There was so much spilled liquid that had dried beside the shifter that the lever that moves when you press the brake was jammed. I also had trouble removing the key when it was in park due to the same problem, once the lever moved, it wouldn't go back.

The console comes out after removing 4 screws & some trim, spend 1/2 hr & save yourself a few hundred bucks @ the dealer.
