95 855 27k Power seats reclined, won't come back up

Post by NC_Volvo_owner »

Power seats on both sides showing same symptom - will recline further but won't come back up. Push the switch to put seat back forward and you can hear it engage, but seems to be jammed. Has power seats with memory. Car came from an estate and wasn't used very much for about three years. Any comments appreciated - need to let son take it back to school on Monday!!

Checked the codes - 331 on the drivers side - wire to motor 1 disconnected - motor 1 is the relciner motor. Passenger side is showing 111 - no code - but same problem.

Any problem if I disconnect the plug to the motor and jump a 12 volt source to get the back up?

Fault code read-out (1995 and earlier models)

With ingition switched off, unclip the test lead from the holder and insert it in proper test socket.
Have paper and pen ready to write down codes
With test lead inserted turn ingition switch to position 2 (run) and press button on diagnostic unit for one second. First code will be displayed.
Push button for one second and second code will be shown.
Repeat until first code is displayed again.

To clear codes

Note:The fault codes cannot be deleted until all of them have been displayed at least once, and the first one is displayed again,
With test lead inserted in proper test socket, and ingition switched to position 2, press button and hold down for 5 seconds. Release the button and after 3 seconds the led will light. When the led lights press and hold down button for five seconds then release it, the led will go out. Turn ingition switch off.

Resetting service reminder light (1995 models and earlier models)

VDO instrument cluster
Turn ingition switch to position 2. Insert test lead into socket A7. Press button 4 times, briefly but firmly. When the led lights and stays light, the system is ready for manual code input. It is now time to enter code 151. To do this press the test button once and release it; wait for the led to light again, then press the button 5 times. When the led lights again, press the button once. When the led flashes several times in succession, the code has been successfully entered and the service light reset.

The easiest way to get them back up quickly is to snip the metal clips holding the leather on the bottom of the seats (in the back) and some pliers on the metal bar running horizontally across the seat back on the bottom. That is what the motor turns to move the gear to raise the seat. You can turn it by yourself and rotate the seat back up.

Another good writeup is here:

http://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16364

The hog rings are a PITA to crimp back on and I just used small ty-wraps to re-secure the upholstery when I put my seat bottoms back together. It has held up just fine.

Sorry if I am hi-jacking this thread but I have a related problem.
My power seat works in almost every direction...except for the backrest. It won't move forward or backward. I can hear a click, when I push the button but that's it.
I haven't tried diagnostics yet...but from the sounds of it, what do you think it is? Wiring, or motor related?

If it is the seat recline function it is almost always the mechanical cable that is featured in the links above.
