Struts & Tie Rods

Post by S60 Blues »

So my next project on the S60 is to try and rid the demons that are causing the front end clunking. I am looking for the stock ride. I just purchased a pair of Sachs struts from FCP Groton, I couldn't resist the price $205 for the pair.

From what I have read the strut mounts and sway bar links are a reoccurring problem so I plan on replacing mine. I originally thought my control arm bushing were gone due to how they looked. The bushing appeared cracked but now I not sure. Any tips? If I do replace them I will go with new controll arms and also replace the ball joint.

I have also read of premature failure of replacement strut spring seats from FCP. So I know the scantec is junk. I am looking for recommendations on the good parts. FCP sells both an aftermarket and OEM strut spring seat by Sachs/Boge and I have seen offerings from IPD, or FEBI, and links from URO Parts and Karlyn?

Questions:
Any tips on identifying bad controll arm bushings?

Who makes the good replacement parts? Spring seats, links, bushings, etc...

Any other OEM or aftermarket parts that routinely prove to be junk?

Supposedly the factory sway bar end links are below par. The IPD offering is supposed to be much better: http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S60/Suspens ... 4-404-862/

They also make a reinforced spring seat:

Also, the XC90 seats are supposed to fit some cars, but I'm not sure if they will fit yours.

I just had many of the same parts replaced. I went with stock struts and lower control arms. I found a dealership back east that was selling factory parts that were about the same price as aftermarket. Tasca Auto Parts is the name of the joint. However I did get the heavy duty spring mounts and strut bearings from IPD. I didn't replace the ball joints but, I'm afraid that may come back to bite me. Still have a little vibration but my tires are shot. Going to have new tires put on this week along with an alignment so hopefully this will cure all my problems.
