what year V70 should I buy

Post by hsvt »

I'm looking for a V70 with a budget limit of $7K and would like to stay under 100K miles. AWDE is prefered but not essential. This seems to come out well for 2001s but I've heard that was a bad year for reliability. Should I go older? Wait for a deal on a 2002?

Any advice/ information is appreciated

Well I bought a 2001 2.4t, and so far has been great, paid $5.0k with 107k past the 105k service, which was about $500 Timing belt + $350 PCV service at the dealer)I did the breaks + rotors + fluid flush for $170 my self , new tires at the front, and this car has been great, I love it!!! I looked at the chassis # and it turns out this is one of the first 3000 that left the factory in March 2000.
It is a one owner car, and this shows in the overall condition of the vehicle. I bought it on ebay back in December, just before Christmas- and if you can wait that long, it is the best time to buy. Before 2001(98-2000 V70 and 850) they come with 4 speed Auto, which cuts your highway gas mileage, I get 27-28 highway, and 22 city, my wife is better than that, may be over 30 when she drives. This car is very quiet - (it is my 7th volvo) you don't feel the speed in it, you can be doing 100 mph, without knowing it.

Please do not buy a 98-00 V-70 AWD I beg you. The Best older option is the 98 V-70 FWD like a dealer trade in with good history. A 2001 V-70 or XC will have ETM issues where a 02 wont but essentially the same vehicle. Again the car should have an extensive service history. It is normal with these cars and shows they are current with repairs.

Thank you both.
Voltech1, Is my understanding correct 98-00 only buy FWD, 01 FWD and AWD is fine except for the ETM issues and 02 and newer are all reliable vehicles?

Pardon my lack of familiarity but what does ETM stand for, about how much does it cost to fix and once it is fixed is the problem over or will it happen again?

Any opinions from others are still very welcome.

Here is the gateway to probably several hundred thousand words on the ETM fiasco.
