72 1800 blown head gasket

I have a 1972 1800ES and just blew a head gasket. It got pretty hot but not sure how hot and how much additional damage is done. I have a very good mechanic but he does not have a ton of experence with 1800s. Is there anything in particular i should be aware of and are there any enhancments (increase performance or life of the engine) i should consider while repairing the head gasket?
