Hello everyone,
I'm curios to know how difficult it is to replace the automatic shifter on a 1994 850 Turbo wagon. The old shifter doesn't look in great shape, I guess it is more of a cosmetic thing now that it is working perfectly fine. I'm guessing that all the shifters in the 850 Turbos are black, I'm not sure yet where to find a used one. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my post.

You can try a junk yard or eBay for a new shifter. After you turn the leather part that attaches to it 90 degrees and pop the boot off, you just pull like heck on the shifter and it will come off- it's sort of dangerous in that you can hit yourself in the face, or worse yet, go through the sunroof so be careful. I found, using an open spanner with something for leverage under the lowest section of the plastic shifter helps. Installation is just a reverse of that- keep pushing it down until it clicks into place- sometimes a rubber mallet helps. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your response. I guess my only question to this is how does the button that is pressed to shift from P-R-N-D-3-L engaged with the whole system? I just don't want to pull out the shifter and break a cable or something connected to that button. I will start looking for a new shifter and will let everyone know how does changing it goes. Thanks.

Any luck on this? My shifter, while working fine is a mess- little rubber pebbles all over the center console area, it's getting annoying. I know I can find a replacement, I just don't know how big a deal it is to change. I haven't been able to find a write up on it.

It's a special Volvo only bulb, about 12 bucks

Well.. not exactly the same..
On a 850.. once you remove the two rear bolts under the little cover in the arm rest area, there is two bolts to remove the little storage area under the ash tray, remove the storage opening, and under that theres two torx bolts that hold the front of the console in place, remove those, then you can lift it up the console and outta the way...
Ask me how i figured this out.. well i didnt remove the two front bolts on the console and cracked the wifes
